WordPress 3.9 is Here!
On April 16, 2014, WordPress released the newest version of their extremely popular content management system (CMS). WordPress 3.9 “Smith” is a major upgrade over previous versions with a focus closing the gap between editing and publishing, making the user’s job of editing and previewing much easier.
Here is a list of some of the major changes to the site that can be beneficial to most users.
WordPress is an extremely user-friendly CMS interface in the sense that anyone who knows how to work Microsoft Word, can pick up the WordPress editor quite easily. There have been minor annoyances that have been rectified in version 3.9 including the ability to copy text straight from a text editor into the WordPress editor without the formatting going awry.
WordPress version 3.9 has made image and gallery usage much easier for users.
Galleries can now be seen in the text editor so that a user can monitor its placement and look in the text that they have written. Gone are the days of seeing a placeholder icon that sort of shows where the gallery will be, but you had no idea how it will look with individual pictures in it.
Images can now be resized directly in the editor which makes life a whole lot easier for users who are not familiar with cropping images or using programs like Photoshop. In the image editor, easier and faster basic image editing tools like image rotation and cropping give users a bit more flexibility in terms of choosing and editing images they would like to use on a page.
Also gone are the days of having to upload an image into the media library or use the ‘add media’ button to insert an image into a page or post. With WordPress 3.9, you can drag and drop an image straight from your computer directly into the editor, bypassing the previous time wasting process of image uploads.
Music and Video Playlists
A wonderful addition to WordPress with the new 3.9 version is the inclusion of a music and video playlist function where clients can create a playlist of their projects to show off to their viewers. This addition is particularly important for users with limited computer knowledge who will no longer have to look for plugins to use if they just want a simple playlist.
Widgets and Theme Changes Previews
WordPress version 3.9 takes the guesswork out of installing and rearranging widgets for your WordPress website. They have created a new widget preview area that lets you see what each widget looks like when you move the order around and add new ones. This is a very handy tool as it is one of the few areas in WordPress where you had no idea what your changes would look like if you were doing them live.
WordPress has stated that their main goal with the version 3.9 release was to make it easier for users to edit in the backend of the editor without having to fear what their change may look like if they had to preview it live. We think that the team at WordPress has done a very good job with this release and as developers that use the backend of WordPress a lot, we were very excited that these changes took place.
